Per The Athletic's Joe Smith, Webber has agreed to terms on a 2-year entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs that is set to begin immediately. The plan, as of this moment, is for Webber to travel to Toronto this weekend to join the Toronto Marlies immediately for their upcoming road trip.
Webber, a 6-foot-7, 208-pound left handed defenseman, was widely regarded as the best defensive defenseman in the NCAA this season and was a shot-blocking machine for Boston University, posting a record-setting 133 shot blocks this season.
During his 4 seasons at Boston University, Webber amassed just a total of 16 points combined, but built a reputation of being among the very best defensive defensemen at the collegiate level. Whether or not that success will translate at the AHL or NHL levels remains to be seen.
Webber was eligible to return to Boston University for one more NCAA season had he chosen to do so. However, it is no surprise that he has opted to sign his ELC and officially turn pro, as he had previously stated that he was excited to have the opportunity to sign a deal with the Leafs. Now, with the formality out of the way, the real work begins.
