Linus Ulmark comments on Leafs goaltending situation; fires shot at Samsonov
Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ulmark fired a shot at Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov, while also dishing out some praise for Joseph Woll on Friday.
Ulmark is a hot commodity in the NHL right now as the Boston Bruins are looking to not only trade the Vezina Trophy winner to free up cap space to sign Jeremy Swayman to a long-term extension, but to also add some more scoring up front. In the midst of all the rumours, Ulmark joined 'Leafs Morning Take' today and discussed his current situation as well as the Leafs' goaltending situation and what it was like to play them in the playoffs.
"I was surprised that they kept Samsonov for that many games against us in the playoffs because every time we played the Leafs and he (Woll) was in net, it felt like it was more of a challenge," said Ulmark.
While it's clear that Ulmark doesn't think too highly of Samsonov's game, he went on to describe what he thinks of Joseph Woll and provided a much more positive review.
"Just watching him, it looked like he was so much more in control of the situations that were thrown at him. As a goalie and I think players as well, they feed off these things. If you see a guy that is flopping around too much or letting out crazy rebounds, feeling like they are always struggling with it then you are going to be on a little bit more of an edge compared to if you have a goaltender that can contain the pucks or put them in areas they are not a threat.
He's like every young goaltender nowadays. He's technically sound. The only thing that might stop him is the mental game. That does not happen over night, it comes down to experience, but he has come a long way in a short time and I think he looks terrific. He looks like a really good goaltender."
Woll is slated to be the starter for the Leafs, but like Leaf fans, Ulmark was not sure as to how the Leafs would approach their goaltending situation this off-season. Ilya Samsonov appears to have played his last game as a Leaf and with injury concerns surrounding Woll, they could yet bring in more than one veteran goaltender to help shoulder the workload.
