Today's game marks exactly 100 years since the Maple Leafs began play in the NHL as the Toronto Arenas on Dec. 19, 1918, a 10-9 loss to the at Montreal Wanderers. The Maple Leafs will wear a commemorative sweater based on the sweater worn by the Toronto Arenas in their second season of play.
This afternoon will be the third and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season. The Leafs and Hurricanes have split the first two games with the road team winning both games while combining for 18 total goals.
Auston Matthews will miss today's game, but he did skate on his own this morning.
"It looks to me like he is getting ready to go ... When they tell me he is ready, he is ready,» head coach Mike Babcock said about his young star, per Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun.
Kasperi Kapanen, who had the lone goal in Saturday night's loss at the Detroit Red Wings, will draw back into the lineup again today. Connor Carrick will remain in as well for the injured Nikita Zaitsev.
The Maple Leafs have not defeated the Hurricanes in Toronto since December 29, 2013 so we would love to streak come to an end, along with their three-game losing streak.
