Maple Leafs Fans' confidence in front office ranks amongst the lowest in the NHL
Maple Leafs fans' confidence in their front office ranks a troubling bottom three in the league, highlighting widespread frustration.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a busy offseason, constructing a new goalie tandem and completely reshaping their blueline with tough, veteran defenders. However, the confidence level of Maple Leafs fans in the front office is embarrassingly low, placing them near the bottom of the NHL.
In an article by Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic, titled "NHL Front-Office Confidence Rankings, 2024: How Fans Feel About Every Team," the Maple Leafs are ranked 30th out of 32 teams.
One fan commented on the new goaltending tandem and Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving's questionable moves at the 2023-24 trade deadline:
''Treliving deserves credit for trying a taskmaster coach and rolling the dice on an efficient Stolarz/Woll combo. But when you look at last year's puzzling trade deadline acquisitions on a win-now team and some of the last two years of free agency decisions, it's hard to think the roster that can get 100-plus points blindfolded is being given its best chance for success.''
Another fan shared their thoughts on the front office moves:
''Overall, while the Shanahan/Treliving duo has been far from disastrous, it has proven underwhelming. A few diamonds in the rough, a few misses for sure, but more or less the same strategy of the previous regime.''
Luszczyszyn notes the high hopes Maple Leafs fans had when the Shanaplan was first introduced, but acknowledges that the plan has fallen short and remains underwhelming:
''At the start of the Shanaplan, it certainly felt like the Leafs were one of those teams. It's getting harder and harder to feel like Toronto is on the cutting edge given the lackluster playoff results over the last decade and some of the decisions made to get there. A lot of what the Leafs do feels safe, boring and bland. It's as if the decisions are made via a focus group to minimize risk hit a few singles instead of swinging for the fences.''
The dismay of Maple Leafs fans is understandable. Despite stellar regular seasons and multiple 100-point seasons with the current core, the team has consistently fallen short in the playoffs. This year will be the first full test of Treliving's tenure, as he has had full control over moves and lineups.
Time will tell if Treliving is the right fit for the Maple Leafs, but the pressure on President of Hockey Operations Brandon Shanahan will be even greater, as fans grow increasingly frustrated with the team's lack of playoff success.
