A bit of a disappointing update from the Toronto Maple Leafs on the Auston Matthews front to report. Matthews has missed the past five games with an undisclosed injury, and it appears as though he'll miss a 6th.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Auston Matthews will not suit up for Saturday's game against the Edmonton Oilers as he continues to recover from his upper-body injury. Dreger says the team wants to make sure their captain is at 100 percent before he takes part in a game.
It seems as though trusted insider Chris Johnston was wrong when he recently suggested that Matthews would return for Saturday's game against the Oilers.
The Maple Leafs want him to be completely over the issue he is battling before skating again and the belief is that he will be fully recovered and that the issue will not be a factor after his return.
Surprisingly, the Leafs have looked pretty good in their captain's absence. Toronto has won four of its last five games and has looked energized in the process. Still, missing your number one player is never a good thing.
After the Edmonton Oilers, the Toronto Maple Leafs don't play again until Wednesday against the Vegas Golden Knights. Hopefully, that will be plenty of time to get the captain back into game shape.
