"While Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas has been extremely busy this summer improving the team, he's yet to close one of the biggest deals on the team. Restricted free agent Mitch Marner remains without a contract and there's been plenty of chatter the two sides aren't even close. It's still expected that Marner will likely miss training camp and no deal will get done soon, however the end result might be the perfect one. NHL insider Renaud Lavoie from TVA Sports in Montreal appeared on Sportsnet 590 and spoke about the Marner situation. Lavoie told Sportsnet that Marner will likely miss training camp however will be there to start the season and will likely be a Maple Leaf for a very long time.
Lavoie: I believe Mitch Marner will be there for the start of the season, and I think they are leaving cap space to do someother things too. — James (@Account4hockey) July 24, 2019
