Matthew Knies' Carries Same Nickname as Leafs Teammate, But His Has a Very Different Meaning
Matthew Knies and Joseph Woll revealed how they're adjusting to NHL life and the hilarious reason why they share the same nickname.
Although Woll is four years the elder to Knies, the 22-year-old and 26-year-old have become almost inseparable off the ice as they both adjust to their second full season in the NHL.
Their sophmore seasons could not have started any differently as Woll began the season the same way he ended last season, with an injury and Knies has been red-hot which has led to debate over his next contract.
In their sit-down with The Athletic's Josh Kloke, the pair revealed that they share the same nickname among their teammates because they spend so much time together.
"Guys call me 'Brick' because of the Brick Woll," Woll said. "But (Knies) isjust 'Brick,'"
While they call Woll the 'Brick Woll' for obvious reasons, they call Knies 'Brick' for a completely different reason. As Kloke noted, the obvious would be just because of Knies' size at 6'3, 227 pounds, but it is hilariously due to him spacing out at times during conversations, as confirmed by John Tavares.
"(Knies) has got his moments off the ice, that's for sure," Tavares said. "When we were living together, sometimes he'd be sitting there scrolling on his phone and just totally miss some of the conversations we were having. We think he's listening but he's not always quite there."
Knies, to his credit owned it.
"I feel like I know (teammates) a little bit better, it's easier to joke around with them and be the dumb rookie they think I am."
As the Leafs head into a back-to-back this weekend against the Detroit Red Wings (Friday) and the Montreal Canadiens (Saturday), Knies will look to continue his torrid start while Woll looks to get back on track after losing to St. Louis for a second time this season last Friday.
