The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, being part of the Original Six teams that comprised the earliest days of the league. Despite their long tenure, the Maple Leafs have struggled with success in terms of championships, having not won a Stanley Cup since 1967.
For fans, the year 1967 has become a painful reminder of the team's past failures. Coincidentally, PTO hopeful Max Pacioretty has chosen to maintain the use of his typical number 67. He believes this number may not actually be a curse, but might just bring good fortune to Toronto.
As Luke Fox reported on X, Pacioretty expressed his sentiment about his number choice:
It's worth noting that Pacioretty is known for wearing #67 on his previous teams, so his choice isn't meant to provoke or disrespect the Maple Leafs at all. He's worn this number since the beginning of his career -- perhaps why he feels it will bring the team better luck.
Pacioretty aims to build on a solid season with the Washington Capitals, where he recorded 23 points in 47 games, demonstrating he still has a place in the NHL after facing a series of injuries in recent years.
If the former Montreal Canadiens captain can elevate his game and build on his performance from last season, staying healthy in the process, then he will have an excellent opportunity with a Maple Leafs team that could really use his scoring talents in the middle six.
