Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly and his wife, Olympic figure skater Tessa Virtue, are currently locked into a legal battle with the City of Toronto.
The reason for the dispute is that Rielly and Virtue's home, purchased in 2022, is considered a "heritage home", meaning that it has a historical significance and that making any alterations requires approval from the city's heritage department.
Rielly and Virtue were already in the process of painting over the red brick masonry in an attempt to go from red to white. The contract was halted, however, when the heritage department became involved.
Rielly enjoyed a relatively productive season for the Maple Leafs in 2023-24, producing 7 goals and 58 points in 72 games. He also served a 5-game suspension during the season for targeting the head of Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Grieg after Grieg scored a bad manners goal into an empty net in a 5-3 win over the Leafs.
