NHL Insider Shares Important Information Regarding Former Leafs Captain John Tavares
TSN's Pierre LeBrun revealed how long the Leafs expect to be without John Tavares after an awkward fall landed him on injured reserve this week.
Ahead of Thursday's morning skate, the Leafs placed their former captain on injured reserve following an awkward fall at practice on Wednesday that that forced him to leave the ice after getting tangled up with teammate Chris Tanev.
On Thursday, during a segment of TSN's Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun revealed that the initial timeline for Tavares' return was two-to-four weeks, but after some more testing on Thursday, believes that Tavares will miss at least two weeks with a lower-body injury.
"Officially, the Leafs just said that he is on IR which means a minimum of one week out. What I was told Wednesday night was that it might be two-to-four weeks for John Tavares to be out. There was a little bit more optimism Thursday morning that perhaps it could be less than that... The Leafs will have a better idea in about 7-10 days where Tavares is at. Until then, it's a bit of guesswork, but I will guess, and my guess is at least two weeks here for John Tavares."
The former first-overall pick from 2009 was enjoying a bit of a career renaissance with the Leafs this season, with 42 points in 44 games, including hitting the 20-goal plateau for the 15th time in his career.
While losing Tavares is a big hit to the Leafs' forward group, it will give the likes of Max Domi and others a chance to play higher in the lineup and break out of some lengthy slumps. It should also end up doing the 34-year-old some good to rest some other bumps and bruises as he has just 1 goal in his last seven games.
