With the Toronto Maple Leafs hovering around .500 hockey 12 games into the 2024-25 NHL regular season, there are some already wondering if a member of the team's coaching staff might be on the hot seat due to one part of the Leafs' recent play.
Marc Savard was hired as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs over the summer. According to head coach Craig Berube, the reason he was brought in was because of his success on the power play as a player in the NHL. Unfortunately for Savard and the Toronto Maple Leafs, it's not working out as the Leafs now have the worst power play in the NHL, going 0-4 Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues. That is raising questions about Savard's status in Toronto.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are now 3-for-38 for power plays on the season. That's a 7.8 per cent success rate, which puts the team dead last in the NHL.
Whatever the true reason behind the issues, Marc Savard was brought in to fix the power play, which has gotten substantially worse under his charge. He and other members of the coaching staff will need to figure it out quickly, or Savard may find himself in the unemployment line soon enough. Toronto has a too much fire power to struggle the way they are, and there's no reason the team shouldn't have one of the better man-advantage systems in the league. Period.
