After Dubas was let go last spring, questions immediately arose around Sheldon Keefe. Dubas took several staff members, including Jason Spezza, along with him to Pittsburgh. As it turns out, another Leaf may end up reuniting with Dubas and Spezza in Pittsburgh.
In an article by Nick Horwat of The Hockey News he outlines a potential deal between the Leafs and Penguins. In exchange for Marner, the Penguins would give up Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Tristan Jarry and a package of picks and prospects. It's an underwhelming offer, entirely dependent on which picks and prospects are included. It would have to include at least one first round pick, and one of Brandon Yager or Owen Pickering as part of the prospect package for the Leafs to even consider it.
Honestly, if that is the return for Marner, I don't think it's in the Leafs' best interest to trade him. He's a 90+ point player who plays in all situations. Playoff performance aside, Marner is an elite player. He should be worth more than a middling defenceman, a mediocre starting goalie and a handful of futures. If that's what we can expect in return for Marner, I say keep him.
