Former Maple Leafs winger Mason Marchment, now a forward for the Dallas Stars, epitomizes the classic case of the one that got away.

Mason Marchment has become a crucial third-liner for a deep and impressive Stars offense. In the 2023-24 season, he set a career high with 22 goals and 53 points in 81 games.

Who would have thought that this trade, announced by @MapleLeafs on X in 2020, would become one of the worst in Maple Leafs history?

''The @MapleLeafs have acquired forward Denis Malgin from Florida in exchange for Mason Marchment.''

The player the Maple Leafs traded for, Denis Malgin, is now a productive player for Zurich SC in the Swiss-A league. Unfortunately, Malgin did not replicate that success in the NHL, recording just 81 points in 257 career games. His tenure with the Maple Leafs was even less impactful, as he managed only 4 points in 31 games.

The Maple Leafs really missed the mark on this one. Marchment would have been an ideal depth scoring winger for Toronto, bringing not only offensive punch but also a strong presence in the corners and an eagerness to not only enter the gritty areas of the ice, but to dominate there as well. These are qualities the Maple Leafs have often lacked in the past, and could certainly benefit from having now, especially after the loss of Tyler Bertuzzi this summer.
