Remarks From Leafs Captain Auston Matthews Highlight His Most Surprising Challenge This Season

Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has addressed the most surprising challenge he has faced during the 2024-25 season, but has an optimistic outlook overall.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off of a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, marking their second consecutive defeat. However, one bright spot in the game was a power play goal scored by Auston Matthews.
While the Maple Leafs captain is having a down year in terms of goal-scoring, he is still on pace for around 40 goals (in a full 82 game season), which is still quite impressive compared to the average player.
As per Mark Masters on X, Matthews opened up about his struggles with scoring this season.
"I'd obviously like to score more. I'll try to stop hitting so many posts, but sometimes that's the way it goes. Just gotta keep shooting and keep believing... scoring's kind of been my thing, but I like to think I'm a complete player. "
Matthews currently has 23 goals and 53 points in 47 games in an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Matthews has truly come into his own as the team's captain in his first year. He has been vocal with the media, often sharing his thoughts on the team's progress. Most recently, he vocalized his support for a trade to improve the roster ahead of the upcoming trade deadline.
Mike Sullivan, head coach of Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off, also spoke highly of Matthews, noting that he has the tools to be a winner. This endorsement carries weight, coming from a two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach.
Matthews and the Maple Leafs will look to bounce back after a few days off, with hopes of a stronger lineup following the trade deadline.
