Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on the NHL on TNT Wednesday night and revealed reason why the Leafs have yet to make a trade with the deadline looming.

Now, with the Hurricanes also unable to sign the Finnish star to an extension before Friday's trade deadline, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, they are increasing their efforts to find a trade partner.
LeBrun's news comes after Elliotte Friedman made an appearance on the NHL on TNT on Wednesday, noting that there are a number of teams interested in the Stanley Cup Champion. Friedman also revealed that despite the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning making moves, the Leafs haven't made a reactionary move yet because they are waiting for more clarity on Rantanen's situation.
"I also think that Toronto is one of the teams that is looking at Rantanen," said Friedman during his segment.
The Leafs desperately need to add some depth down the middle, but given the ridiculous asking prices for players like Brayden Schenn and Scott Laughton, using the same assets to acquire a dominant playoff performer like Rantanen is not something Leaf fans would hate.
There is now just over 24 hours until the trade deadline and although Treliving has been quietly working the phones, we may see him take a much larger swing than he himself originally predicted.
