The Maple Leafs have limited trade assets to work with ahead of the trade deadline and one reporter believes there's only one right decision on how to spend them.

Earlier this week, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman affirmed that it was his belief that the Leafs would rather not trade away their 2026 1st round pick.
This has led to a lot of speculation that this could be a year in which the team moves one of its top prospects, Easton Cowan or Fraser Minten.
Two players who have been connected to the Leafs in recent reports are Buffalo Sabres forward Dylan Cozens and St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn. According to Sportsnet's Luke Fox, though, one may make more sense than the other.
Fox suggested that, while Dylan Cozens might be one of a handful of players which may make it worth trading Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten and/or their 2026 1st rounder, the better fit and the more realistic target may be Blues captain Brayden Schenn.
"The Schenn smoke feels more likely to be traced to flame, what with Doug Armstrong's willingness to get creative and the mutual adoration shared between Craig Berube and the current Blues captain.

The Blues want to get younger. The Leafs just need to getbetter. Schenn brings experience, winning, edge, defensive responsibility, secondary scoring, and a lower cap hit."

Fox went on to mention that the possibility is also there for the Leafs to swing even bigger than just Schenn, also adding a veteran blueliner in St. Louis as well, though he didn't name names.
It's really anyone's guess how the Leafs will proceed ahead of the deadline, but the consensus appears to be that if the Leafs come across a deal that they like and if they feel that it makes them better, they're absolutely going to pounce rather than wasting any more time and risking missing out on another big target.
