Now just a couple of short weeks away from the start of training camp, the Maple Leafs are looking to try to round out their roster. On Tuesday, they added veteran forward Steven Lorentz on a PTO and today, the pursuit of Pacioretty continues.
The Fourth Period is reporting on Wednesday that, while the Leafs remain very high on Pacioretty, another interested party may be holding things up, as the Detroit Red Wings are pushing hard to acquire the former Canadiens captain as well.
Pacioretty's health issues in recent years have been well-documented, but the 35-year-old sniper did appear in 47 games for the Washington Capitals last season, showing that he can still produce by racking up 23 points over that span.
Coming into this season, Pacioretty is finally fully healthy for the first time in a long time, so there is hope that if he does land a deal in Toronto, he'll be able to contribute and just be just another passenger.
