"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced yesterday that John Tavares will miss a minimum of two weeks with a broken finger. The captain's injury comes at a tough time as his line with Mitch Marner finally found chemistry with a new line mate in Trevor Moore. It also puts the Leafs' in a tough spot because of their schedule with the team's next six games which includes Boston, Columbus/Boston home & away back-to-back, SJ/Montreal home & away back-to-back then Washington.Where it also puts the Leafs' in a tight spot is the roster. CapFriendly pointed out that the Leafs are so hard up against the cap, they can't even make an emergency call up. "Leafs currently have $380k in cap space from LTIR relief, too little to recall any player. Tavares would also have to be injured 10 games & 24 days for LTIR placement.
With 20 players on the roster, the club is also ineligible for a $0 cap hit Emergency Roster Exemption recall.
The 20 number for players is specific to skaters (excluding goaltenders), and assuming Tavares is placed on IR, which excludes him from the roster count."Luckily the Leafs already have Jason Spezza and Nic Petan available who've been scratched recently.
