After several unconfirmed reports had surfaced on Thursday evening, suggesting that Gaudreau and his brother had been struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding their bikes in New Jersey, the hockey world gathered together on Friday morning to mourn the passing of Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau following confirmation from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The NHL community is at a total loss for words and the condolences have been pouring in all morning, including this message from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Gaudreau and current Leafs GM Brad Treliving were extremely close, having spent 8 years together in Calgary, and even after Gaudreau's departure from the Flames during free agency in the summer of 2022, Treliving remained very complimentary of the player and person that "Johnny Hockey" was.
It's unfathomable what Gaudreau's family must be going through, especially with his sister's wedding originally supposed to have taken place this weekend.
Rest in peace, Johnny and Matthew. The hockey world loves you and you will be missed, terribly.
