Gilmour enjoyed a Hall-of-Fame career that spanned 20 seasons with 7 different clubs, where he amassed a total of 450 goals and 1,414 points. Throughout his illustrious career, Gilmour had many pit stops but none more prolific or lengthy as his stay in Toronto. From 1991-92 to 1996-97, Gilmour scored 131 goals and 452 points in just 393 games, while also donning the "C" in his final 3 years with the organization.
Acquired from the Calgary Flames as a part of a 10-player trade, Gilmour was tasked with helping a struggling Maple Leafs team who had failed to qualify for the post-season in 1990-91. In his first full season with the club in 1992-93, he not only paced the team with a franchise record 127 points, but he also pushed them to Game 7 of the Conference Finals against Wayne Gretzky and his Los Angeles Kings. Gilmour did more of the same the following year with 111 points, but the Leafs fell in the Conference Finals again, this time against Vancouver.
1993-94 was the final year Gilmour donned the "A" as the Maple Leafs traded away their captain, Wendel Clark, to the Quebec Nordiques in a move that netted them Mats Sundin. Gilmour was named captain and was tasked with leading the team during the lockout shortened season in 1994-95. In his 3 seasons as captain, the Maple Leafs were ousted in the Quarter-Finals in 1995 and 1996 before failing to qualify in 1997.
Gilmour scored 57 goals and 165 points in 186 games as captain for the Maple Leafs before his trade to New Jersey. He was supplanted as team captain by the legendary Sundin the following year, a role that Sundin wound up playing through 2007-08.
