As arguably the top prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Easton Cowan is on the cusp of becoming an NHL player, even though he didn't make the cut this season.
Currently, Cowan is dominating in the OHL with the London Knights and is chasing Alexander Radulov's impressive 50-game point streak record in the CHL; Cowan's streak currently stands at 44 games, dating back to last season.
Another opportunity for Cowan to shine is with Hockey Canada. The Mount Brydges, Ontario native was part of the 2024 Canadian World Juniors squad, albeit in a minor role, where he recorded 2 points in 5 games. However, according to TSN, Cowan is projected to take on a major role this year, with expectations of playing on the first line.
Cowan made significant strides during training camp, as head coach Craig Berube noted that he was close to shedding his OHL habits before ultimately being sent back down.
The World Juniors have historically been a catalyst for player development, as leading a national team on such a prominent stage at a young age can be a great experience for a budding young star. If Cowan can lead the Canadian WJC squad to a medal or produce at a high level, he may make a push for the NHL as early as the end of this season, after his OHL season wraps.
The Canadian World Junior squad could boast a wealth of talent this year, alongside Cowan, including Tij Iginla, Brayden Yager, and Zayne Parekh, among others likely to make the team. Anything less than a medal would be seen as a disappointment for Easton Cowan and team Canada.
