TSN's Darren Dreger has provided an update on Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe after the veteran suffered an apparent head injury on Sunday night.

Late in the first period of the Leafs' 3-2 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night, Jake McCabe took exception to Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway bumping rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby.

McCabe knocked Hathaway to the ice and landed a couple of shots on the downed forward before the two dropped the gloves. There was a great deal or concern for McCabe after he lost his balance during the fight and fell backwards, slamming his head into the ice as as Hathaway's knee connected with his upper-body as well.

McCabe was dazed and had to be evaluated by the Leafs' training staff before skating off under his own power. At the start of the second period, the Leafs confirmed that he would not be returning.

On Monday, Darren Dreger was asked if McCabe was going to miss time with what many suspect to be a concussion. Dreger responded, noting that he expects the Leafs to provide a very minimal update until he can be fully evaluated, but will likely miss at least a couple of games.

"It looks like it. That was the expectation as of last night. He had to go through protocol, and it looked pretty obvious it was a head related injury... The suspicion last night was that it was concussion related, but he requires more evaluation. We may not get true details today. If Craig Berube is available, chances are, he's going to say more testing is required or he is day-to-day because that is all he knows in the moment. With that type of injury, assuming it is specific to the head, he might need a few more days before he is truly evaluated."

McCabe missed five games in December after taking a puck to the head, so it should come as no surprise that he will likely miss at least this week's set of games for the Leafs.

With McCabe out, the Leafs will have to find a new partner for Chris Tanev, which should mean Conor Timmins will draw back into the lineup for the foreseeable future.
