Domi is coming off a strong season with the Leafs putting up 47 points in 80 games and 4 points in 7 playoff games. While these point totals are solid, though not spectacular, Domi brings an entirely different skill set to the Leafs as well.
The 29-year-old is the ideal playoff player. He hits, fights, mucks it up after the whistle and loves to get into the dirty areas. He can also dish the puck extremely well and win some faceoffs.
Domi was a staple on the top line with superstar Auston Matthews for the 2nd half of the regular season. The chemistry between the Matthews, Domi and Bertuzzi line proved to be far and away the best of any line the Leafs had all season.
Max Domi's father, Tie Domi was a Leafs fan favourite during his time here, adored for his grit, intensity and his tremendous fighting ability. Max, however, while not as strong as a fighter as his father, was actually 6th in PIMs in the NHL this year with 118.
Finding a sweet spot for a new contract in Toronto will be a challenge for Domi and the Leafs, but with both sides appearing to have enjoyed the fit, it's likely that we'll see Domi back next season. The question is, at what cap hit and for how many seasons?
Check out this potential Domi contract projection from Evolving Hockey:
A $4.617M AVV over 3 years for a player who complements a generational goal scorer like Matthews seems like a bargain that is too good to pass up on.
Domi didn't set any individual records this season, so his cap hit should remain below that $5M threshold, which could make re-signing him attainable for the Leafs - especially if they move out a big contract.
Would you be okay with the Leafs offering Domi a multi-year contract in excess of $4.6M per season? Let us know in the poll below.
