Western Conference contender reportedly "closing in on Mitch Marner"

With so much discussion surrounding Mitch Marner this summer, it can be difficult to know what to believe, but a recent rumour has Marner heading West.
Obviously, as with any trade rumour, we should take this with a grain of salt, but anytime there's a rumour that suggests a player could be headed to Las Vegas, we should at least consider it, given how aggressive the Golden Knights have been in their pursuit of star players.
Per Eklund of Hockey Buzz, multiple sources have suggested that a Marner to Vegas deal could be close.
"The Leafs are counting too highly on Marner's desire to stay in Toronto. Expecting discounts that simply won't be there." one source stated, while another went further adding, "The Knights are currently entering into the first pre-season where they are noticeably weaker than they were the year before. Marner changes all that."

I'm not usually one to believe anything coming from Eklund, but Vegas was able to acquire Mark Stone, Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl among other stars when folks didn't think it was possible. I'm not saying I believe the most recent rumour, but I'm not ready to rule it out yet either.
Marner is coming off of another season at a 100-plus point pace, having scored 85 points in just 69 games. Unfortunately, an ankle injury against Boston earlier this year derailed his progress and prevented him from securing his first career 100-point campaign.
