"There has been a lot of speculation over the past few days on whether or not Lou Lamoriello will be the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. This is technically the final year of his contract for being general manager, but he still has two years remaining with no defined role.
During Sportnet's Headlines segment last Saturday night, the panel discussed Lamoriello's future and wondered if he would even be willing to take on lesser role after this season.

James Mirtle dug a little deeper into this issue for The Athletic on Wednesday. Mirtle says that at some point team president Brendan Shanahan sat down with both Lamoriello and assistant general manager Kyle Dubas to discuss a plan for succession. This meeting was a direct result of the Colorado Avalanche offering the title of director of hockey operations to Dubas last spring.
Mirtle says there are three outcomes to this story this summer with the first being Lamoriello getting an extension to remain the general manager. However, with a handful of general manager jobs expected to become available this offseason, there is no guarantee that Dubas will stay on.
The second option is to move Lamoriello into a senior advisor role and promote Dubas to general manager to make sure he remains with the Leafs organization.
The third option is someone else, possibly Mark Hunter, being named general manager. This would only happen if Shanahan wants to make a change and Dubas is lured to another team.
How do you see this playing out?"
