The Toronto Maple Leafs and their standoff with restricted free agent William Nylander doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. Nylander is standing firm in his position that he's looking for a long term deal similar to that of Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl, while the Leafs are looking for a shorter deal with a much lower cap hit. If the Leafs and Nylander can't get a deal done before December 1st, Nylander will be ineligible to play the entire season. While on the surface that might seem like it would hurt Nylander, it would actually hurt the Leafs even more. That means the Leafs would have to sign Nylander, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner all at the same time next summer, not to mention filling out the rest of their roster. While the Leafs insist they won't be trading Nylander, that can change very fast if a deal still isn't done by November.
