WWE Superstar and long-time YouTuber Logan Paul actually leaked the captaincy change for the Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews back in June.
Back in June, social media influencer and WWE superstar Logan Paul uploaded a video entitled 'I Challenged The World's #1 Tetris Player (He's 14)" where a number of influential people across a variety of platforms were shown wishing Logan good luck. In the video, Matthews, who signed an endorsement deal with PRIME last year, was featured for just a few seconds but the caption under his name introduced him as "NHL Captain".
While the decision to name Matthews the next Maple Leafs captain was only made public yesterday, it appears that the decision was made internally months ago. Whether or not it was an accidental leak or typo by Paul's social media team is unknown, but technically, alternate captains aren't really referenced as NHL captains.
We should know more during the press conference, which the Leafs have called for 11AM ET time Wednesday to introduce Matthews as the 26th captain in franchise history.
