BREAKING: Ryan Reaves suffers gruesome eye injury during scrap against Flyers' Deslauriers
After some harsh words were exchanged between the benches when the Leafs and Flyers met just 5 days ago, it was obvious that Tuesday night's rematch would see the intensity ratcheted up. It started in the warmups, with Ryan Reaves and Flyers' heavyweight Nicolas Deslauriers appearing to discuss the finer details of their upcoming bout. With both players having a plethora of fights under their belts, their experience showed as they casually talked about how and when they would attempt to bash each other's faces in.
Once the game began, it didn't take long for the pair to find each other at centre ice. Reaves definitely threw more punches, but Deslauriers scored a couple solid shots at the end, as well as the takedown.
Unfortunately for the Leafs, Reaves left the box before his penalty was over and headed down the tunnel with one eye tightly shut. The fact that there didn't appear to be any swelling around the eye makes me think that it was poked, not punched. I doubt Deslauriers, the respectable vet that he is, purposefully went for the eye poke in the fight. It's much more likely that it was accidental.
As far as who won the fight, it's hard to say. Reaves threw more punches, but was far from accurate. Deslauriers got the takedown, but only landed one punch, with the eye-poke taken into consideration, I'll give the win to Reaves by disqualification.
