The veteran of nineteen seasons may be seeking retribution for a controversial contract termination that took place on November 29th and had kept him out of the game he loves and the NHL for over five weeks until he made his Edmonton Oilers debut.
Gary Bettman, the commissioner of the NHL, revealed that Perry currently has a grievance pending, but he has not yet filed it. The veteran forward has made it known publicly that he feels his former team didn't have the proper grounds to go ahead with terminating his contract.
The player and the NHLPA are given sixty days to file a grievance and with the deadline having come sometime last week, Perry is fortunate that the NHL and the NHLPA have extended his time to file a grievance.
It appears that Bettman and the NHL are in support of Chicago and their original decision to terminate the contract, but the Deputy Comissioner and Chief Legal Officer of the NHL, Bill Daly stated that the NHLPA wants to step in and appeal the contract termination in support of Corey Perry.
If a grievance is both filed and Perry and the PA do decide to appeal the league's decision regarding his contract termination, the Blackhawks would be libel to pay out the remainder of the contract or a settlement amount that is agreed to during the grievance filing.
