Don Cherry reveals where he stands with HNIC host and former Coach's Corner co-host Ron MacLean
In November of 2019, Don Cherry was relieved of his post as host of "Coach's Corner" on Hockey Night in Canada following a rant on the first intermission segment where he targeted immigrants by using the phrase "you people", and said immigrants are not honoring the country's fallen soldiers by refusing to wear a poppy. At the time, and to this day, Cherry has not apologized for his remarks and stands by what he said.
With his dismissal, many thought that his co-host and host of Hockey Night in Canada, Ron MacLean, was going to be let go as well because of the backlash he received on social media for not cutting Cherry off during the segment. However, that was not the case, as the following night, MacLean issued an apology and, from Cherry's point of view, threw his colleague and friend of 30+ years under the bus.
Since the incident, MacLean has said numerous times that he and Cherry are still friends. However, five years later while sitting on his front porch, Cherry had a very different opinion of their relationship.
"I don't think we'll ever be friends again. You can't be friends after that. It's too bad because we used to have fun."
While MacLean has certainly moved past the issue, Cherry is still standing firm in that MacLean threw him under the bus and that there was nothing wrong with what he said.
