First, for those who missed the Rodrigues attempt, here's the play, which resulted in a no goal call, as Rodrigues appeared to double-tap the puck, which is against the NHL's official shootout rules.
Joseph Woll was already in the back, removing his equipment when he found out the play was under review. He and the handful of Leafs who had already made it to the locker room returned to the ice and watched Noah Gregor rip one past Anthony Stolarz to give the Leafs an edge. Nick Cousins could not beat Woll and the Leafs were able to secure the win in a very unlikely turn of events.
Following the game, reporters began to share some information regarding the Panthers, many if whom had left the ice, celebrating a win, and weren't even around to witness the goal being called back or Noah Gregor's goal after the failed Rodrigues attempt.
When Nick Cousins missed his attempt, the Panthers were reportedly irate, many cursing the decision from the War Room in Toronto. One player even uttered the words "Only in Toronto", as if to suggest that the NHL employees in the War Room were somehow under the influence of the Maple Leafs. Panthers players even expressed their scorn towards the officials as they had left the ice following the loss.
It's too early to determine whether or not any supplemental discipline will occur as a result of the abuse the officials took or the comments made about the league's decision to nullify the Rodrigues goal. I can't imagine that this one will go away quietly though.
