A recent situation in Calgary may have the NHL contemplating some major changes, which includes an exemption to allow teams to dress a 3rd goalie for emergency situations, per trusted NHL Insider Darren Dreger.

On a recent edition of Insider Trading, Dreger brought up the incident with Dan Vladar being run over in Calgary, which nearly led to EBUG (emergency backup goaltender) Dusty Nickel taking to the ice for the Flames.

Dreger revealed that the NHL using amateur goalies in games, however infrequent, is "a bad look" for the league. Dreger told the TSN panel that NHL GMs have begun discussing the option of having a roster exemption to allow teams to carry a 3rd goalie for instances like this one to avoid having non-pro goalies playing in the NHL at all.

Obviously, everyone knows about the David Ayres debacle and the Leafs using young Jett Alexander at the end of last year as an EBUG when they couldn't afford to call up a goaltender. This rule change would prevent any future occurrences where such situations arise and would be equal opportunity for all teams to avoid having to play an EBUG.
