Thursday's heartbreaking news regarding Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau is still fresh in everyone's minds and it's still hard to believe that the NHL star and his brother are gone.
Higgins, the man who was detained at the scene, admitted that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, with an open container in his vehicle when he hit the brothers, who were out cycling together the day before their younger sister's wedding. What's worse is that he showed absolutely no remorse during his first video court appearance.
One new detail in this story that is really working people up into a frenzy is that Higgins, a decorated US Army officer, was actually arrested for a DUI at least once prior, in 2005 in South Carolina. Unfortunately, per a write-up from the Daily Mail, Higgins had his charges dismissed after the arresting officer failed to attend the court appearance.
A repeat offender, Higgins was allowed to walk free and continue to driving under the influence. Now, it has cost Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau their lives. It has cost Madeline and Meredith Gaudreau their husbands. It has cost Tripp, Noa and Johnny Jr. their father. It has cost the entire Gaudreau family their loved ones.
This continues to be the dominant story of the summer, with so much anger and heartbreak stemming from a very avoidable situation. Our hearts continue to be with the Gaudreau family, as well as Johnny and Matthew's friends and teammates during this difficult time.
