Late Friday afternoon, it was announced that the Buffalo Sabres had acquired depth forward Ryan McLeod and prospect Tyler Tullio from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Savoie.
Many were probably waiting for the other shoe to drop, revealing the remaining details of the deal. However, when the Sabres confirmed the trade as accurate, their fanbase was in immediate dismay, while the rest of the hockey world laughed hysterically.
Sabres GM Kevyn Adams is taking a lot of heat for this deal right now, both from fans in Buffalo and other fanbases around the National Hockey League.
As Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin suggested on Friday, this deal has the makings of the infamous Filip Forsberg/Martin Erat trade, and he's probably not too far off.
Savoie was limited to just 23 games for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL last season, but produced an astonishing 19 goals and 47 points in that span. He was the 9th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, but was ranked by some as a top 5 prospect.
I'm not quite sure what Kevyn Adams was thinking here and how he got the sign-off from the team's ownership group, but if this move backfires, and it probably will, it's certainly a fireable offense.
