The latest development in the Adam Johnson saga is absolutely heartbreaking
On October 28th, during a game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL, former Pittsburgh Penguin Adam Johnson tragically lost his life after being struck by a skate blade in the neck. Many more details have come to light since the incident, but today we learned one of the saddest and most heartbreaking details. Prior to his passing, he was planning to propose to his girlfriend, Ryan Wolfe.
It was revealed that prior to heading over to England for this season, he had bought an engagement ring and hid it from her. Scott Pionk, father of Winnipeg Jets defenseman Neal Pionk, who was very close with Johnson revealed that Johnson's grandmother had seen the ring before he left and that he was going to propose "at some point".
Wolfe was told of the ring and eventually found it hidden in the apartment that she and Johnson shared in Europe. While speaking at Johnson's memorial service, Wolfe was seen wearing the engagement ring.
Johnson, 29, played 13 games for the Penguins while also spending time in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Ontario Reign and Lehigh Valley Phantoms before heading to Europe last season.
The passing of Johnson sent shockwaves through the hockey community and was truly a tragic incident. I cannot imagine what his girlfriend and the entire Johnson family are going through.
