After the Montreal Canadiens placed Carey Price on LTIR on Wednesday, they appeared poised to head into the 2022-23 season with a goaltending tandem of Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault. However, a pair of developments late last night and early this morning have muddied the water a bit.

Let's start with this morning, as the Habs have inked 23-year-old Cayden Primeau to a 3-year contract extension, which carries an $890K AAV. The deal is not a two-way deal, however. It's a one-way deal, which means that no matter where Primeau plays, he'll earn his NHL pay - a pretty good indicator that the plan is to have him play in the NHL sooner than later.

In addition, Kevin Weekes reported late Wednesday night that the Canadiens have begun working on a multi-year contract extension with Jake Allen, which seems to indicate that the Habs plan to run with an Allen/Primeau tandem, which could actually have Montembeault on the outside looking in.

Possibly the most intriguing angle in all of this is what it means for Carey Price. It was reported just a few weeks back by GM Kent Hughes that Price would likely not play in 2022-23. Signing both Primeau and Allen to multi-year deals might indicate that the Habs might believe that Carey Price has played his last NHL game.
