Last night in Pittsburgh, we were witness to a brutal cross check to the face of Nashville Predators defenseman Mark Borowiecki by Pens forward Evgeni Malkin. For those of you who have not yet seen the cross check, click here.

Per the NHL's Department of Player Safety, Malkin has been offered a hearing, which means that a suspension is very likely incoming, which is not exactly a shocker to anyone, given the injuries Borowiecki suffered as a result.

On March 13th during the Heritage Classic game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews was offered a hearing and was subsequently suspended for two games for a cross check to the neck of Sabres defender Rasmus Dahlin, who did not miss a shift and was not injured on the play. I'd imagine that Malkin's suspension will be 3-4 games.

These are the types of plays that simply have to come out of the game. Malkin could have simply dropped his gloves and I'm sure Boro would have obliged him, as he's been known to do. Using your stick as a weapon and causing an injury to another player is not a hockey play.
