Dubois didn't even manage to make it to next summer, when he'd be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. Instead, he informed the Jets that he wouldn't be signing any deal in Winnipeg this summer and would instead prefer a trade.
Many had assumed immediately that this would mean that Dubois would accept a deal to Montreal and only Montreal. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, Dubois has reportedly thumbed his nose at a potential deal to Montreal, per TSN's Darren Dreger.
According to Dreger, in an official report on Tuesday, the Canadiens wanted to get back into the running for PLD's services. Unfortunately for the Habs, they aren't able to offer the type of package that the Jets are looking for, as they don't have the proper NHL-ready pieces that Winnipeg covets. Even more unfortunate for the Habs, Dubois would rather negotiate an extension with the Los Angeles Kings than the Canadiens.
This is quite the pivot from where we were even one year ago, when it was believed that Dubois would push for a deal with the Habs and ONLY the Habs. I'm not sure if that's a statement on how Dubois feels about the organization and its current direction or just the allure of the Los Angeles lifestyle. Nevertheless, this wasn't something I had on my summer bingo card.
