Earlier today, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Leafs and William Nylander's camp are far apart in negotiations and have a lot of work to do to hammer out an extension. Friedman said the Leafs are hoping to sign him for under $9M per season while he believes that Nylander will take no less than anything that starts with a 9 in front of it.

This evening, from Nashville and ahead of the NHL awards, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported on Insider Trading that not only is Brad Treliving expected to meet this week with Lewis Gross to discuss the extension for Nylander, but that he is also fielding calls for Swedish winger.

"Treliving has had preliminary talks with Nylander's camp but he's also been fielding calls on Nylander. It's important the leafs have dual traction here cause if he doesn't sign then they have to look at trading him." - LeBrun on Nylander

If the Leafs get the sense they won't be able to sign Nylander long-term, they will likely trade him as Treliving likely won't let a Johnny Gaudreau situation happen with Nylander as they are repped by the same agent. Thankfully, the Leafs don't need an answer by July 1st, as Nylander only has a modified no-trade clause which gives the Leafs flexibility to trade him to a handful of teams.

By this point, Treliving has a general idea of the market for Nylander and will look to pull the trigger sooner than later if they reach a stalemate in negotiations.
