One week from today, the Toronto Maple Leafs will kick off their 2023-24 season against the Montreal Canadiens. Between now and then, GM Brad Treliving and AGM Brandon Pridham have some work to do to get the team cap compliant, which can mean only one thing. Additional cuts are coming this week.

The Leafs have already cut 30-some players from their training camp roster, including a few of the organization's top prospects in Roni Hirvonen, Topi Niemela, Ty Voit, Dennis Hildeby and Vyacheslav Peksa. There are at least 7-10 more cuts coming, not including the players currently on IR/LTIR.

The Leafs have trimmed their training camp roster down to 30 active players and 5 injured, who break down as follows:

Goalies (3)Martin JonesIlya SamsonovJoe Woll

Injured (5)Dylan GambrellBobby McMannConor TimminsMatt MurrayJake Muzzin

Naturally, Muzzin and Murray are expected to be sidelined for the entirety of 2023-24, but Timmins, McMann and Gambrell are all expected back over the next few weeks - though Timmins, as we know, will begin the season on LTIR.

While things are beginning to take shape, there's still plenty of work to do to trim the roster down to size. Obviously, the biggest surprises from camp have been rookies Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan. Both youngsters remain with the team, though it is believed that they'll be sent back down to their junior clubs this week, barring unforeseen circumstances that have one or both beginning the season on a 9-game NHL trial.

On the back end, Sheldon Keefe has been very impressed with rookie defenseman Mikko Kokkonen, though he's, more likely than not, headed to the Toronto Marlies for the 2023-24 season.

In the case of Gambrell and McMann, both players have been nursing injuries throughout camp, so their status with the team remains uncertain. I'd imagine that the intention at this point is to have both players begin their seasons in the AHL, but we'll have to await confirmation on that.

The Leafs are back in action tomorrow against the Detroit Red Wings in what will mark their second-to-last pre-season contest. We should have a clearer picture of what the roster will end up looking like at some point following that game and Saturday's pre-season finale against those same Red Wings.
