Analyst identifies some of the pieces that the Flames may ask for from the Leafs in a Zadorov/Tanev deal
There has been an abundance of talk about the Maple Leafs looking to acquire Nikita Zadorov and/or Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames over the past week, and what potential trade packages could look like. It's safe to say that a deal for either player wouldn't be a minor swap, but as far as just how high the cost might actually rise, that's yet to be determined.
Yesterday on Sportsnet's "Pre-Game" show, long-time Canadian Hockey League analyst Sam Cosentino was asked about the potential prospects that Calgary would be seeking in exchange for one or both of the Flames' defensemen. The Leafs may not like the primary name being thrown around.
"It would cost a big package," Cosentino said.
A handful of names were brought up including Matthew Knies, Nick Robertson and Easton Cowan. Cosentino then explained who would be the most likely to be included in a package.
"Prospect wise, I think all are available. Easton Cowan is in there, although dealing a player one year after their draft year isn't good asset management. He isn't near his value. Knies will be the first ask, that won't happen. Fraser Minten will be in there, Minten is the second ask... Nick Robertson would be in there. He's finally starting to show glimpses of what everybody saw, three or four years ago." Cosentino also touched on the fact that Knies and Minten were essentially first round picks and with the Leafs in "win-now" mode, why wouldn't they give up some of what they have and let Wes Clark and the scouting staff do their job to find the next one? The issue with giving up the likes of Minten or Cowan and possibly Topi Niemela is that it would force the Leafs to take a huge hit in their already shallow prospect pool. With the Leafs in Sweden for the week and Calgary in no rush to move either of Zadorov and Tanev, it will be interesting to see how this plays out and how high the asking price gets based on the competition in the trade market and whether or not a bidding war ensues.
