The most common solution that many have agreed on is to trade Nylander if he doesn't come down in asking price. However, TSN analyst Dave Poulin thinks there could be another solution.
Poulin was on TSN 1050's First Up and mentioned that it's going to be extremely tough for the Leafs to trade Nylander right now, because a move that substantial has to be the right fit. With the current salary cap situation being what it is, Poulin just isn't convinced that the fit is there for the Leafs because of Nylander's salary demands not likely to change even if he does land with another team. Poulin did, however, propose a solution.
Poulin mentioned the Rangers and K'Andre Miller's new 2-year deal that was completed yesterday as a way to go. That deal helps the Rangers the next couple of seasons and sets Miller up to enter a new deal when the cap is supposed to be in the mid-90's.
If Nylander wants to stay in Toronto and the Leafs want to keep him, this may be the best route for both sides to go right now. If Nylander was willing to sign a shorter-term deal with a raise on his current $6.9M salary but well under his current $10M ask, perhaps the two clubs can make a bit of a handshake agreement to make Nylander whole and give him his $10M AAV the year after the Tavares contract comes off the books and when the cap is expected to be much higher.
