It's been quieter than anticipated over the last week in Toronto, largely due to the fact that the Leafs currently sit nearly $9M over the salary cap and will need to clear some space before putting the finishing touches on their roster.
The Leafs are expected to rid themselves of the final year of
Matt Murray's contract this summer, whether that be through buyout or trade, and when that happens, the Buds will have only
Ilya Samsonov and
Joseph Woll to fall back on as options who have any NHL experience. Having a 3rd goalie with an abundance of NHL experience might be a good idea in the event of illness and injury.
Obviously, it goes without saying that Elliott, if he was being courted by the Leafs, would be coming to Toronto on a league-minimum type of a deal. He's also someone, who at 38, would be more likely than not to clear waivers. If such a deal occurs, it's a low-risk move and shouldn't come as a surprise, as GM Brad Treliving will want to be prepared for all situations heading into his 1st year at the helm in Toronto.
