During the Kyle Dubas era in Toronto, we had seen the Leafs opt to trade back in the draft on a number of occasions as a way of increasing their number of pucks, which in turn provided the club with more darts to throw at the dart board.

While we don't yet know what new GM Brad Treliving's plans are for the upcoming draft next week, with the Leafs only having 3 picks in the draft this year, trading back from 28th overall in a deep draft and picking up and extra selection might be a wise move - especially with how Wes Clark, the head of the Leafs' scouting department, has been able to identify real value beyond round 1.

We know that Treliving, as of right now, won't be permitted by the Flames to be at the Leafs' draft table in Nashville next week. However, he will still have plenty of influence and input on picks and trades.

As far as what might be available to the Leafs out there, there are a number of teams with high second round picks who may be looking to sneak into the back end of the 1st round. The Leafs, if they do choose to trade down, may have a number of interesting options available to them, including potential deals with Arizona, Anaheim, Detroit and Chicago.

This year's draft is jam packed with talent, but outside of the top 15 picks, there appears to be a lot of variance with picks 16-32, and the chance that some players slated to go late in the first round may end up slipping into the upper end of the 2nd round. If the Leafs have any inkling that they may be able to snag a 1st round talent in the 2nd round, then perhaps moving down makes a world of sense to the Leafs.
