As we're all very curious as to what's going to happen over the next week here, one of the things Masters asked Rielly was about the extensions for Auston Matthews and William Nylander, who are both eligible to sign on July 1st. Rielly's comments on the subject should give Leafs Nation some relief if there was any pre-existing concern there about either player.
While Rielly doesn't reveal too much, his insight is valuable here, as not many people other than their teammates and GM Brad Treliving would have a better idea of what Matthews and Nylander are thinking - aside from 34 and 88 themselves, that is.
Both sides have indicated in the past that there is no immediate rush and that everyone wants the same thing here, which is Nylander and Matthews to remain in Toronto. It will be a nice surprise if one or both of them sign on July 1st when they are eligible to sign extensions, but even if those extensions aren't announced right away, it would appear as though they will be signed at some point. Then we can put all of the speculation about either player wanting to leave to rest.
