Auston Matthews admits that his current slump is aggrevating

Last season, Auston Matthews started with just 1 goal in his first 6 games before catching fire on the Leafs' Western road swing. He then went on to score 50 in 50 and 60 over his next 73 games. He is in the same spot this season, except this season he has 1 goal after 7 games.

It's not for lack of trying or lack of chances as Matthews has recorded 33 shots on goal in 7 games and the number of shots he has taken that have only narrowly missed or been blocked is certainly substantial. Against Winnipeg, we saw Matthews completely miss on a one-timer that would've headed straight to an empty net and last night against Vegas, he was first robbed by Logan Thompson and then the post in what would normally be sure goals for him.

Asked post game about his struggles, Matthews stated the obvious saying, "Yeah, it sucks. It's frustrating for sure." Overwhelmingly frustrating given that he is shooting just over 3.5% on the season when he hasn't had a season below 14% since entering the league.

2016-17: 14.3%

2017-18: 18.2%

2018-19: 14.7%

2019-20: 16.2%

2020-21: 18.5%

2021-22: 17.2%

2022-23: 3.6%

He is too good of a player for his bad puck luck and shooting percentage to continue. It's as simple as that. Once he gets one, he'll get on back on track and, I'm sure, will be in the hunt for another Rocket Richard trophy.
