The Leafs put forth a borderline embarrassing effort against the Vegas Golden Knights, losing 3-1 on Monday, sewering themselves by not moving their feet and failing to connect clean, hard tape-to-tape passes. They also hung Ilya Samsonov out to dry in the contest and have him no goal support despite the 25-year-old netminder making some sensational saves to keep the Leafs in the game for all 3 periods.

There was a scary moment in the third period involving captain John Tavares, who took a 97mph shot off of the side of his knee in an unpadded area, dropping to the ice immediately in agony.

Tavares would need the help of his linemates to make it back to the bench, where he was met by a pair of trainers, who escorted him back to the locker room to receive some medical attention. Tavares is not only the team's scoring leader - he was also one of the best Leafs on the ice against Vegas. Tough loss there.

Fortunately, Tavares was examined and it was determined that there was no structural damage to his knee. To the surprise of everyone on the Leafs bench, including head coach Sheldon Keefe, Tavares did return to the game, but the damage was already done as the Golden Knights had taken a 3-1 lead in the game and they would not relinquish that lead.

The Leafs still have 3 games remaining on their current road trip, so it will be interesting to see if Tavares is indeed good to go in San Jose on Thursday or if his knee will force him to the sidelines for one or more of the next 3 games in California.
