Matthews is not the first superstar to publicly state the pre-season and training camp should be shorter and I'm sure he won't be the last. With how much players train nowadays, as Matthews stated, there isn't really a point to have such a lengthy training camp. The players think it is too long, there are coaches that think it is too long and fans think it is too long. Shortening training camps would do wonders for the league in terms of capturing the fans' attention as many feel that the season and playoffs are too long anyways.
If the NHL were to shorten training camps, they would be able to start the regular season earlier which would mean that they would not have to award the Stanley Cup in mid-to-late June when all of the fans are more concerned with what beach they are going to. It would also give players more time in the off-season to recover from injuries and surgeries allowing teams to ice their best possible rosters right from the start of the season.
