The difference this season, is that the Leafs are on their West Coast road trip earlier than last season and on their visit to California, Matthews scored 3 goals in 3 games before returning home to to score a hattrick against Colorado. The West Coast road trip last season sent Matthews on a 10 game tear where he scored 13 goals and 18 points.
Following practice yesterday, Matthews was asked once again about his early season struggles, which reporters called "unusual" to which he responded nonchalantly saying, "I wouldn't call it super unusual, I've gone through them before. I just approach it normally, put in the work, go out there, have fun and shoot the puck. Once one goes in, I'll get my confidence back and just keep going."
It's pretty clear that Leafs fans and the media are bothered much more by his lack of goal scoring than Matthews is. Statistically, Matthews is off to a better start this season overall. Through 7 games last year, he had just 4 points and this season through 7 games, he has 6. He will find the back of the net soon enough, and once he does, he stands a pretty good chance of doing what he did last year; scoring seemingly at will.
