The Colorado Avalanche announced via their twitter account that defenseman Sam Girard has been taken to hospital after a nasty hit from Blues forward Ivan Barbashev during Saturday's Game 3. Girard was trying to carry the puck behind his own net when Barbashev hit him from his blind side, leaving his feet in order to inflict maximum damage. Girard's head hit the boards hard and then bounced off of the ice following the hit. The Avalanche are calling it an upper body injury.
As for the hit itself, Barbashev was forechecking hard and caught Girard not paying attention to his surroundings. There was no penalty called on the play. The result is extremely unfortunate. It remains to be seen whether or not the Department of Player Safety will get involved here.
